Clinical Significance:

Monitoring of electrolyte status, screen water balance, diagnosis of respiratory and metabolic acid-base balance; evaluation of hydrational status, diarrhea, dehydration following ketoacidosis in diabetes mellitus and other disorders.

Physician Office Specimen Requirements

Do not allow patient to clench-unclench hand as this builds up lactic acid, which may cause a falsely low pH.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Serum

Container/Tube:  Serum gel tube(s)

Specimen:  1 mL of serum

Transport Temperature:  Refrigerate

Collection Instructions:  Avoid gross hemolysis.

Note:  1. Indicate serum on request form.

2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

 

Plasma

Container/Tube:  Green-top (lithium heparin) tube(s)

Specimen:  1 mL of lithium heparin plasma

Transport Temperature:  Refrigerate

Collection Instructions:  Avoid gross hemolysis.

Note:  1. Indicate plasma on request form.

2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

Additional Information

Limitations:

Hemolysis and prolonged contact of serum with cells produces elevation of potassium. May be performed on heparinized plasma excluding EDTA plasma.
