Physician Office Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube:  Black-top EDTA or Vacu-tecTM tube(s) - Clotted or underfilled tube is not acceptable.

Specimen:  1 mL of EDTA whole blood

Transport Temperature:  Refrigerate

Collection Instruction:  Fill tube completely.

Reference Values

Males

<50 years:  0-15 mm/hr

≥50 years:  0-20 mm/hr

Females

<50 years:  0-20 mm/hr

≥50 years:  0-30 mm/hr

Additional Information

Limitations:

Anemia and paraproteinemia alter the results. Westergren sedimentation rates will be increased during pregnancy.
