Important Note

  • The Ordering Physician Must Contact the State Epidemiologist for Authorization; 617 983-6800
  • Authorization is Required Prior to Sending the Specimen to the State Lab
  • State Specimen Submission Form Must Accompany the Requisition, see link under Resources
  • State lab testing: Monday-Friday mornings, closed weekends. Specimens must be collected by 9am on Friday to be processed by the end of the day.

Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Specimen Type(s)


Serum: Draw 1 SST or Red top tube
2-3 mL minimum volume
Centrifuge whole blood tubes within 2 hrs. from collection,
pour off serum into sterile tube, avoid hemolysis.
Refrigerate serum; ship with cold packs within 24 hours.

If storage or transport will exceed 24 hrs or if specimen was
already frozen, store frozen at -20° C and ship on dry ice
as a Category B.

 

CSF: Sterile collection clear top, Red/Light Gray top tube or
plastic tube with screw cap.

1.0 mL minimum volume, 3-5 mL preferred
CSF specimens must be submitted in a tightly sealed sterile
collection tube; if screw or snap top wrapped with paraffin to
avoid leakage.
Refrigerate CSF; ship with cold packs within 24 hrs.
If storage or transport will exceed 24 hrs or if specimen was

already frozen, store frozen at -20° C and ship on dry ice
as a Category B.

 

Urine: Sterile urine cup or conical tube.
3-5 mL of urine minimum volume, more is acceptable.
Urine must be submitted in a tightly sealed sterile container.

Refrigerate Urine following collection; ship with cold packs
within 24 hrs.
If storage or transport will exceed 24 hrs or if specimen was
already frozen, store frozen at -20° C and ship on dry ice
as a Category B.

 

Amniotic Fluid: Collect via amniocentesis and aseptically
transfer to sterile conical tube.
0.4 mL minimum volume, 15-20 mL in conical tube preferred.
Submit in a tightly sealed sterile container; if conical tube
wrap with paraffin to avoid leakage.
Refrigerate amniotic fluid following collection.

If storage or transport will exceed 24 hrs or if specimen was
already frozen, store frozen at -20° C and ship on dry ice
as a Category B.

 

Tissue:
Fresh Frozen tissue

Approximately 1 cm3 section of tissue
Freeze asap following collection and keep frozen at -20° C
Ship on dry ice as a Category B.


Formalin fixed tissue
Approximately 1 cm3 section of tissue in adequate formalin
Store at Room Temp, do not ship with frozen tissue.

Ship at room temperature
Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue block
Ship at room temperature
