Test Mnemonic BUN Urea Nitrogen (BUN), Serum


Clinical Significance:

High BUN occurs in chronic glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, other causes of renal disease, and with shock. Low BUN occurs in normal pregnancy, decreased protein intake, with intravenous fluids, in some but not all instances of liver disease, and in the deficiencies of the urea cycle enzymes.
