Physician Office Specimen Requirements

Submit stool specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container sealed in a biohazard plastic bag. (Rectal swab, unlabeled specimen, leaky specimen, specimen contaminated with urine or barium, frozen specimen, multiple specimens received on the same day are not acceptable.) Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature. If there is a delay in transport of ≥3 hours, refrigerate specimen and deliver to laboratory.
